Iron Maiden Name Simon Dawson As New Touring Drummer

Iron Maiden has officially announced a major shift in its lineup: Simon Dawson will take over as the band’s touring drummer, succeeding the legendary Nicko McBrain. The news follows McBrain’s decision to retire from live performances after an illustrious career spanning over four decades with the heavy metal icons.

Nicko McBrain’s Retirement Announcement

The announcement of McBrain’s retirement came on Saturday, December 7, as he prepared for his final live performance with the band at Allianz Parque in São Paulo, Brazil. In an emotional statement shared on Iron Maiden's website, the 72-year-old drummer reflected on his decision:

“After much consideration, it is with both sorrow and joy, I announce my decision to take a step back from the grind of the extensive touring lifestyle. I wish the band much success moving forward.”

McBrain joined Iron Maiden in 1982, replacing Clive Burr, and played a pivotal role in shaping the band’s iconic sound. Despite being the band’s drummer for over 40 years, McBrain was the second most-recent addition to their lineup, following guitarist Janick Gers, who joined in 1990.

While stepping away from live performances, McBrain has reassured fans that his connection to Iron Maiden remains strong. He plans to stay involved with the band through various projects and continue working on personal and business ventures. Closing his statement, he shared a heartfelt message:

“I look into the future with much excitement and great hope! I’ll be seeing you soon, may God bless you all, and, of course, ‘Up the Irons!’”

Simon Dawson Joins the Band

On Sunday, December 8, Iron Maiden confirmed Simon Dawson as the band’s new touring drummer. Dawson is no stranger to Iron Maiden’s inner circle, having worked closely with bassist and co-founder Steve Harris as part of his British Lion project. The band shared a statement highlighting Dawson’s extensive experience:

“As The Future Past Tour concludes after 81 shows to over 1.4 million fans, Iron Maiden are delighted to announce that stepping in behind the kit for 2025 is a name familiar to many of our fans – Simon Dawson, a former session drummer and Steve’s rhythm section partner of the past 12 years with British Lion.”

Dawson’s history with Harris dates back to 2012, when he contributed to British Lion’s first album, later playing a larger role in The Burning and subsequent tours. His credentials include performances across multiple continents, cementing his reputation as a seasoned and versatile drummer.

The Run For Your Lives Tour 2025

Iron Maiden is gearing up for their Run For Your Lives tour in 2025, which will celebrate 50 years of the band’s legendary career. The tour kicks off on May 27 in Budapest, Hungary, with 32 dates scheduled across Europe. This milestone promises to be a grand celebration of Iron Maiden’s legacy, with Simon Dawson joining the band for this monumental chapter.
